Grants Microfinance Bank began as Gwagwalada Community Bank on November 11, 1993.
Community Banking, introduced by President Ibrahim Babangida in 1990, aimed to serve local communities and reach the financially excluded.
Under the leadership of its founder, the late Dr. Edith Chinedu Aliyu, the bank evolved into a Microfinance Bank, receiving a provisional license on November 23, 2007, as Microfinance Banks replaced Community Banks.
